Choosing the Right TV, What You Need to Know

As you start your TV buying journey, here are some considerations to keep in mind:

    • ¿Cómo influirá la ubicación de tu televisor en el tamaño?
    • ¿A qué distancia estarán los espectadores del televisor?
    • Do you need a specific resolution for watching sports?
    • What is the lighting in the room like where you watch your TV?
    • Do you want to browse the internet on your TV?

All of these questions will help you to make the best choice for your lifestyle and your budget, and if you still aren’t sure  which TV is best for you, our in-store team is standing by, ready to help you with your decision!

Multiple Types of TVs to Choose From

    TV OLED

OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs offer a completely different technology than LED. Millions of independently controlled pixels that emit their own light provide higher contrast, perfect black, improved viewing angles, and greater color accuracy. OLED TVs are thinner and use less power than traditional backlit LED TVs. OLED TVs are perfect in darker rooms while watching fast moving action movies and sports. OLED technology is also great for gaming capable of 4K 120hz.

    Mini-LED

Mini-Led is an evolution of LCD TV technology by using smaller (1/40th the size) LED's to illuminate the screen that provide finer control that improves aspects such as contrast (difference between dark and bright parts of an image), black levels and blooming. Mini-LED TVs can reach a higher peak brightness than an OLED TV.

    Quantum Dot/QLED TVs

The Quantum Dot LED technology uses phosphorescent crystals for better backlighting conditions on LCD TVs. QLED displays offer rich colors in an affordable range. Higher range QLEDs are unaffected by burn-in and afterglows. QLED TV’s add a layer of red and green nanocrystals and generates a backlight that is brighter.

    TV LED

Light Emitting Diode TVs offer outstanding picture quality and work well in virtually any lighting condition, even in very bright rooms. With extremely thin profiles, LED TVs can fit into almost any space without taking over your room's décor. If you are planning to host outside, an LED television may be the way to go for outdoor activities.

    TV LCD

Liquid Crystal Display TVs are excellent for most viewing needs, especially in brighter rooms. LCD TVs are known for their vivid colors and superior HD performance.

What is the Best TV Screen Size

When you're staring at that giant wall of TVs in the store, it can be tough to tell what size you need.

TV Types Based on Screen Sizes

Small TVs | 55” and smaller

Small to mid-sized models are great for the bedroom, smaller living rooms, or anywhere you don't want the TV to overpower the room. Samsung's 43" UHD 4K Smart TV or 50" 4K UHD TV are great contenders in this category. From 32" to 55" Conn's offers a solution at affordable price points up to premium technology to maximize the use of a smaller living space.

    Large TVs | 65” – 75”

We want to get lost in the picture when we go to the movies. Choose between Samsung's 55" 4K UHD TV and LG's 55" OLED C1 Series 4K HDR TV for a better bargain.

Ultra Large TVs | 85” and larger

When you want to get completely immersed in a movie or the game, these are the TVs for you. Top-line TV manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Sony, and others have dominated the market with flagships in the 65", 75", and 85" screen sizes. Conn's has an extensive assortment of ultra large TV's to suit everyone's needs .

    Deciding on Your TV Resolution

Screen resolution is a measure of the number of pixels on the screen. From 720p to 8K these numbers denote the number of horizontal lines of pixels the TV features. More pixels in a display equals more details, which equates to a better picture quality.

    TV Resolutions:

    • 8K - 7680 x 4320
    • 4K - 3840 x 2160
    • 1080p - 1920 x 1080
    • 720p - 1280 x 720

The first number in a resolution refers to the number pixels horizontally, while the second number refers yo the number of pixels vertically.

    TV 8K

Though the technology is still evolving, 8K TVs currently boast the best picture resolution on any TV display, at 7,680 X 4,320 pixels. Four times the resolution of 4K TVs, these TVs use the best image processors, highest HDR standards, and more. Try out Samsung’s promising Neo QLED model in 8K resolution.

    TV 4K

Delivering up to four times the resolution of 1080p TVs,  4K TVs provide truly breathtaking picture quality. Also known as Ultra High Definition or Ultra HD TVs, these state-of-the-art TVs offer a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. Additionally, these TVs are programmed to recognize the format of your watching (live TV, streaming content, or a DVD or Blu-ray) and upscale the signal to fit the available pixels properly.

    HDR TV

HDR TVs display a broader and richer range of colors, much brighter whites and deeper, darker blacks. The extensive coverage allows for more natural, true-to-life colors closer to how we see them in real life.

    Full HD TV

Full HD TVs are the standard for most TVs manufactured today.

Everything You Need to Know about Refresh Rates

The more often it's refreshed, the smoother and less blurry the image will be. Refresh rates are measured in hertz (Hz). So if a TV offers a 240Hz refresh rate, it will rebuild the picture 240 times per second.

    • A 240Hz TV rebuilds the picture 240 times per second, providing the smoothest picture.

The higher the refresh rate, the better the TV is for watching sports and action movies and playing games.

    Don't Forget the TV Accessories

But your TV is just the starting point of a theater experience.  Home theaters usually require a few add-ons to be genuinely “cinematic.” You’ll want an excellent audio receiver and a sound bar or speakers for incredible sound. You may even wanta Blu-ray or DVD player. The right cables are going to be vital to hooking it all together.

Once you’ve invested in a high-definition TV with all the bells and whistles, why settle for so-so sound coming from the built-in speakers? A sound bar delivers high-quality, stereo sound from one thin, sleek bar that can be mounted or placed under your TV.

    Reproductores de Blu-ray

Blu-ray discs might look like DVDs, but they're pretty different. Blu-ray technology was designed for high-definition TVs and delivered five times the information carried by DVDs, along with a superior picture and sound quality. You'll need an HD TV with a Blu-ray player, ideally with at least 1080p resolution.

    Reproductores multimedia

Dedicated streaming media players connect directly to your HD TV and provide access to thousands of TV episodes, movies, and more, allowing you to connect to a world of entertainment through apps like Amazon Video, Netflix, and Hulu.

    Soportes de pared para TV

Of course, you can place your TV on a cabinet or TV stand. But with today’s slim profile TVs,  TV wall mounts are often a safer, sleeker, and more space-efficient solution. Wall mounts vary from fixed to flexible, so you can tilt them up or down and swivel them around.

    Cables HDMI

Cables carry the audio and video information to your TV, so investing in quality cables is a good idea.  HDMI cables carry both picture and sound and are the best connection for HDMI-ready TVs, Blu-ray players, A/V receivers, gaming consoles, and more. TV Buying Guide FAQs

Our TV buying guide also lists prominent questions by potential buyers globally.

What qualities to look for when buying a TV?

The seven most prominent features you should look for in a TV are:

    1. Connection ports: Your TV should have HDMI and other ports compatible with your existing devices.
    2. Screen Size: Choose 65” or larger screen sizes for better picture quality.
    3. Screen Resolution: Do not go lower than 4K resolution.
    4. HDR Compatibility: Your OLED, QLED, or LED TV should be HDR compatible for those high-resolution Netflix shows or gaming experiences.
    5. Refresh Rate: For a better cinematic experience, go for a 120 or 240 Hz refresh rate.
    6. Hybrid TV: Check whether your TV can switch between “Smart” and “Manual” modes.
    7. Wi-Fi Compatible: Your TV should be Wi-Fi enabled and streaming functions in-built.

Which is better – 4K, QLED, or OLED?

OLED TVs tend to be better in picture quality and eye comfort than LED-backlit QLED screens or LCD screens. LCD and QLED screens produce blue light. 4K screen resolution can be an added advantage for both types of screens.

Is QLED or OLED better for bright rooms?

QLED TVs work best in bright rooms or outdoors as they generate the highest peak of brightness up to 2,000 nits. OLED screens can't create more than 500-600 nits. OLED TVs are best for low lighting conditions.

What is the advantage of QLED over LED TV?

Due to the added layer of particles in front of the LED panel, the QLED display emits more light. This ability allows it to create richer colors, greater depth, dynamic contrast ratio, and peak brightness. QLED TVs even work better in outdoor conditions.

Which is better – Smart TV or Digital TV?

Digital TVs leverage a regular TV's features to operate "smart" functions. On the other hand, a Smart TV is much more than an accumulation of apps. Better video processing capacity, more HDMI ports, better picture quality, and many other features make it a better option for TV buyers.
